What should you bring to the transfer?
Bring the title, identification and the buyer’s details. Check that the VIN on the title matches the vehicle and identify every named owner and recorded lien. Tell the purchasing partner if a name differs from your identification before arranging collection. A price agreement does not resolve a missing signature or an outstanding ownership issue.
When should you sign the title?
Arrange the signing with a notary, authorized tag service or dealer that can complete the applicable transaction. PennDOT directs sellers to complete the assignment and odometer information, and requires notarization or authorized verification of the seller’s signature. Do not sign a blank assignment or leave the buyer unidentified. Ask the agent to resolve mistakes before making corrections yourself. These are the ordinary transfer instructions. The scrap-processor exception below must be considered when the purchaser is acting in that capacity.
Does a bill of sale replace the title?
A receipt records the transaction, but it does not replace the required title assignment. Pennsylvania titles are used with Form MV-4ST for the applicable title and registration transaction. The agent can identify the correct processing route when the purchaser is a vehicle business or the vehicle will be dismantled.
What should you keep after collection?
Retain the buyer’s identity, agreed amount, VIN, sale date and a copy of the completed transaction record. Remove your plate and follow PennDOT’s return or eligible transfer instructions. Confirm the paperwork arrangement before the driver arrives so payment, document handover and collection can happen together.
Does a scrap-metal sale use the same signing rules?
Not always. Section 1163 provides a separate route for transfers to scrap metal processors, including an exemption from notarization for the assigned title or salvage certificate. Confirm the purchasing entity and its applicable process before signing. A business calling itself a junk-car buyer does not by itself establish which legal route applies.
What if more than one owner is named?
Identify every named owner before arranging the transfer and have the agent confirm the required signatures and any representative’s authority. Do not assume that one co-owner can sign for another. A deceased co-owner changes the route: the title’s survivorship wording and estate status matter, as explained in the inherited-vehicle guide.
