Can someone sign when the owner cannot attend?
PennDOT describes general powers of attorney for circumstances such as illness or absence. Its guidance requires notarization and two witness signatures for a general power of attorney. Have the processing agent review the document and its scope before the representative signs vehicle paperwork.
What is the secure MV-POA route?
Secure power of attorney addresses designated dealer or approved-insurer transactions involving odometer disclosure when a title is held by a lender or is missing. It is not a blank authorization for any buyer to sign for both parties. Ask the participating business to supply and explain the correct document.
Does a limited authorization expire?
PennDOT’s guidance generally limits third-party limited powers of attorney to 90 days, with specified exceptions. The same guidance restricts using an ordinary limited authorization to let a dealer complete certain title assignments. Let the agent check the date, document type and proposed signer together.
What should the owner and representative agree?
Confirm who negotiates the amount, signs, receives payment and releases the vehicle. Keep a copy of the authority and transaction records. If the owner has died, follow the estate-transfer route rather than assuming an earlier authorization settles the estate paperwork.
