Does the buyer keep your plate?
No. Keep the plate out of the vehicle handover and ask the agent about a permitted transfer if you plan to use it on another vehicle. Follow PennDOT’s return instructions when you will not transfer it. Selling the car and changing the registration record are related but separate tasks.
When should you contact your insurer?
Tell the insurer that the car has been sold and give the completed transfer date. Coordinate cancellation with the sale and registration steps; do not cancel early while the vehicle remains registered and subject to insurance requirements. PennDOT’s financial-responsibility guidance explains the evidence needed when it questions a lapse or a vehicle’s disposition.
What if the car is an insurance total loss?
Keep the salvage or insurer documentation. PennDOT’s insurance FAQs address proof of a salvage disposition and ownership transfer. Ask the insurer which document shows who now owns the car, particularly if you retain the vehicle after the claim.
Which records should you save?
Keep your sale receipt, buyer information, plate return or transfer record, and insurance correspondence together. These records help you respond if a later notice refers to the period around the sale. Contact the office named on a notice rather than assuming collection automatically closed every record.
