Which ownership document is assigned?
Section 1163(b) requires an owner transferring a vehicle or salvage vehicle to a scrap metal processor to assign the title or salvage certificate. That assignment is exempt from notarization and corporate-officer verification. Ask the purchaser which document it requires for your particular vehicle and keep a record identifying the receiving business.
What happens to a titled vehicle transferred for scrap?
Under section 1163(c), the processor submits the assigned title with the prescribed designation that the vehicle is nonrepairable. The vehicle cannot subsequently be rebuilt or retitled. Decide whether you are selling for this final scrap route before completing the transaction.
What if the title is lost or defective?
Section 1163(d) addresses an owner’s salvage vehicle with a faulty, lost or destroyed title located on that owner’s property. The processor must comply with the section, and the transferor must verify the salvage-vehicle report. This limited provision does not authorize selling someone else’s abandoned car or establish that every missing-title vehicle qualifies.
What should you confirm before accepting collection?
Identify the purchaser, the intended disposal route and who completes the required records. Explain any lien, estate issue or ownership dispute. Keep the VIN, payment amount, date and receiving business details with your receipt. Do not surrender a blank assignment.
