What should you ask the lender?
Request the payoff amount, its validity date and the lender’s release instructions. Ask whether the title is electronic or paper and where it will be sent after release. Share the timing with the buyer. An offer lower than the loan balance does not cancel the difference.
How does an electronic title affect the sale?
Pennsylvania’s Electronic Lien and Titling system lets participating lienholders manage lien records electronically. The lender must handle the applicable release through that system. Do not assume that a paper title is already available simply because you made the final payment.
What if the loan was paid but the lien remains?
Ask the lender for acceptable evidence of satisfaction and check the PennDOT instructions for your record. PennDOT describes release documentation involving MV-38O or an appropriate notarized lender letter in relevant circumstances. Have the agent confirm what is needed for your title rather than relying on a bank statement alone.
What should happen before pickup?
Confirm who will receive payment, who will supply the title and whether the lender permits the proposed transfer. Keep the payoff and release records with the transaction receipt. Repair-shop and storage bills are separate from a recorded finance lien and may also affect release of the vehicle.
