Texas salvage and nonrepairable vehicle documents

Identify the title classification before agreeing to a sale or road use.

Read the document and issue date

Texas distinguishes salvage documents from nonrepairable titles. The January 2026 TxDMV manual explains that a nonrepairable title issued on or after September 1, 2003 does not permit rebuilding, retitling or registration. Older documents require their applicable historical route.

A salvage title is not permission to drive

The manual says salvage vehicles cannot receive registration until the required rebuilding, inspection and rebuilt-title application steps have been completed. Do not drive a non-running or salvage vehicle to complete a sale; arrange collection.

Explain insurance and ownership status

Gather the actual title, any insurer correspondence and lien information. Ask the purchasing partner which ownership document is required for the vehicle’s classification before signing. Describe damage and missing components accurately.

Keep the disposal record

Retain the purchase record and applicable transfer documents after collection. The terms junk and scrap describe the vehicle’s intended use; they do not replace its legal title classification.
