Record the damage before collection

Texas insurance guidance advises contacting your insurer promptly and taking photographs. Comprehensive coverage is the coverage that addresses flood damage; check your policy and deductible with your insurer.

Avoid starting a flooded car

TDI recommends a mechanic’s assessment before attempting to start a flooded vehicle. Water can cause electrical and other damage. Tell the collection partner about water exposure and arrange towing instead of testing whether the car can be driven.

Confirm who will retain the vehicle

If your insurer declares a total loss, establish whether the settlement transfers the vehicle or lets you retain it. Do not agree to sell a vehicle that is being surrendered to the insurer. If you keep it, the insurer deducts salvage value from the settlement under TDI’s guidance.

Bring the settlement and title information together

Explain the current title classification, any remaining loan and the damage to the purchasing partner. A settlement and a separate purchase offer are different amounts. Use the salvage and lien guides for the remaining paperwork.
