Check plate retention for the transaction

TxDMV’s plate-change guidance says a private-party seller may retain plates and transfer them to another vehicle of the same type they own with approval. Confirm the applicable process for your sale instead of relying on older temporary-tag advice.

Collection avoids an unnecessary road trip

Our partners provide free towing for the purchase. Tell the partner whether the car rolls and steers and whether keys are available. Do not attempt to drive an unsafe vehicle simply to deliver it.

A transit permit has limits

The TxDMV Vehicle Transit Permit applies to eligible passenger cars and light trucks when the seller keeps the plates. It is not available for salvage or nonrepairable vehicles. Check the official permit requirements if road operation is being considered.

Keep your sale records

Record the purchaser, transaction date and plate arrangements. Submit the Texas transfer notification and keep its confirmation with the sale documentation.
