Texas junk-car sale paperwork checklist

Start with the vehicle and owner

Locate the ownership document and compare its VIN with the vehicle. Have the recorded owner’s identification ready for the purchasing partner. A registration receipt, set of keys or purchase enquiry is not automatically a substitute for the required ownership evidence.

Choose the additional document route

A missing regular Texas title uses the certified-copy process. A lien needs the lender’s release or agreed payoff route. An estate or representative sale needs the applicable authority. Use the matching guide below rather than completing every form in the directory.

Check the transfer before signing

Confirm the actual buyer’s name, sale date, agreed amount and required mileage disclosure. Read each field and keep copies of the completed documents. Ask the buyer which title or recycling procedure applies to this vehicle.

Keep the notification confirmation

For a Texas-titled sale, submit the applicable Vehicle Transfer Notification and retain its confirmation with the purchase record. The notification and ownership transfer perform different jobs; completing one does not complete the other.
