Replacing a missing Texas vehicle title

Check the recorded owners and any lien before applying for a certified copy.

Identify the recorded lien

TxDMV says a recorded lien requires the lienholder to apply or provide an original lien release. A paid-off loan may still appear on the record. A replacement title does not remove that interest automatically.

Prepare Form VTR-34

The certified-copy application is Form VTR-34. For a mailed application, TxDMV requires all recorded owners to sign and provide copies of their photo identification. Read its separate representative requirements if someone is applying for an owner.

Check the waiting period and service route

TxDMV specifies a 30-day waiting period after the last title was issued before applying for a certified copy. Applications can be handled by mail or in person under the current instructions. Check appointments, fees and required documents before travelling.

Arrange the sale with the paperwork ready

Tell the purchasing partner that the title is being replaced. Match the VIN and owner details before signing the final transfer and arranging free collection.
