Check the current age requirement
G.S. 20-62.1 allows a secondary metals recycler or salvage yard to buy a vehicle without a title when it is at least 12 model years old and the statutory conditions are met. This is a dismantling or scrap route, not a general resale exemption.
Prepare ownership and identification
The seller must certify the lawful right to sell, the qualifying age and absence of a lien or security interest. Required identification and a statement that the vehicle is for scrap, crushing or parts are also part of the transaction.
Let the buyer complete its checks
The buyer must perform the required stolen-vehicle verification and maintain and report transaction records. Confirm the purchasing entity accepts this route before pickup; do not sign a statement that is untrue.
