Replace a missing North Carolina title

Request a duplicate North Carolina title with notarized Form MVR-4. NCDMV requires a 15-day waiting period after receiving the application before issuing the duplicate.

Which application option fits your sale?

MVR-4 includes options for a duplicate as recorded, a duplicate with assignment and a duplicate with lien removal. Select the option that matches the transaction and complete the owner signatures before a notary.

What happens when a lien is recorded?

The form includes a lienholder certification. Without a release, the duplicate is mailed to the first lienholder. Resolve the lender’s documentation before agreeing to hand over the vehicle.

When can the duplicate be issued?

The mandatory waiting period starts when NCDMV receives the application. An original title becomes void after a duplicate is issued; return the original if you later find it.

What should you tell the purchasing partner?

Explain that the title is being replaced and whether a lender is involved. Keep your application copy and agree the collection date after the required ownership documents are ready.
