Selling an inherited vehicle in North Carolina

Confirm who can assign the title before arranging collection.

Start with the estate’s circumstances

Ask the Clerk of Superior Court about the authority needed for the estate. Keep the title, death certificate and any estate appointment documents available. Do not sign the deceased owner’s name.

Check whether the limited affidavit applies

The Judicial Branch publishes Mecklenburg County instructions for MVR-317 with specific eligibility conditions. That packet is not a universal estate-transfer form and its sample cannot be filed. Use the clerk for the deceased person’s county to confirm the appropriate route.

Arrange the authorized handover

Identify who will sign and release the car. Share that arrangement with the purchasing partner before pickup and retain the court and sale records together.
