Return or properly transfer the plate
NCDMV requires surrender when selling without transferring the plate or when a vehicle is totaled. Do not leave your plate with the purchasing partner as an informal transfer.
Keep insurance until the return is handled
NCDMV instructs owners to return the plate before cancelling liability insurance to avoid fines. A non-running car should be collected by towing, with the paperwork sequence arranged beforehand.
Save evidence of return
Return the plate to a license plate agency or follow NCDMV’s mailing instructions. Keep a receipt or mailing record with the sale documents. If the plate is lost or stolen, ask about the applicable verification form instead of claiming it was returned.
