Can an out-of-state document establish ownership?
New York DMV recognizes acceptable ownership documents issued by other states. The exact document and transfer requirements matter. Show the purchasing partner which state issued the title and whose name appears on it before arranging pickup.
Will the signature need notarization?
Some issuing states require notarized title assignments. Follow the instructions for the particular title and use DMV’s ownership-proof guidance to check the applicable route. Do not assume New York’s signature practice overrides the issuing state’s requirements.
What if my lender holds the original?
A copy accepted for registration is not automatically a transferable ownership document. Contact the lender about release of the original and any lien-release paperwork. Tell the buyer that the title is held elsewhere before confirming collection.
What should I check before signing?
Compare the VIN, owner name and title status. A title signed over to you but never put in your name can require a title-only application before a further transfer. A deceased owner or a branded document also needs its own document review.
