Replace a missing New York car title

Order the replacement through DMV and allow for mailing before scheduling a document-dependent pickup.

Can I receive a title immediately at an office?

DMV prints replacement titles centrally and mails them to the owner. An office application does not produce a title at the counter. A missing New York title can be replaced online, by mail or at an office, subject to the requirements for that method.

Who can use the online service?

The owner must have a current US address on DMV’s record, and the vehicle must be registered and titled in New York. Online replacement cannot be used for a deceased owner, a power-of-attorney request or removal of a lien. Use the appropriate mail or office process instead.

What should I prepare?

For mail applications, DMV lists Form MV-902, proof of identity and the required fee. Check the recorded address and current instructions before sending the application. Tell the buyer the document is being replaced and agree pickup once the ownership paperwork is ready.
