What must the power of attorney contain?
DMV’s MV-82.1 instructions require the signing date, the principal’s notarized signature and identifying details, the agent’s name and address, and applicable business details. The agent adds P.A. after their signature. Read the document’s powers and limits before using it for a vehicle sale.
Does holding the keys authorize me to sign?
Holding keys, helping a relative or paying repair bills does not itself appoint you as the owner’s agent. Give the purchasing partner the authorization details before arranging collection. Confirm that the document covers the intended transaction and that the principal still owns the car.
Is a dealer’s secure power of attorney the same process?
DMV publishes separate MV-93 instructions for a dealer handling a replacement title and ownership transfer. That procedure includes specific copies, notarization and dealer steps. Do not substitute an informal permission letter for the required documents.
What should I prepare for pickup?
Keep your identification, the ownership document and the accepted authorization together. Ask the buyer which originals must accompany the transfer. Use the estate guide when the owner has died; an earlier authorization should not be assumed to replace estate authority.
