Sell a New York car with a lien

Resolve the lender’s interest and prepare its release before transferring ownership.

Does paying off the loan remove the paperwork requirement?

Obtain the lender’s lien release and compare it with the vehicle and title details. New York DMV’s title guidance explains the documents needed to remove a recorded lien and obtain a clear title. A payment receipt and a lender’s release serve different purposes.

What if money is still owed?

Ask the lender for current payoff and release instructions. Tell the purchasing partner about the balance before agreeing a collection. Confirm who pays the lender, how any difference is handled and when the ownership documents can be released; do not assume a junk-car offer settles the debt.

What should travel with the sale records?

Keep the release, completed ownership documents and payment record together. If the paper title still lists a lender, confirm the accepted transfer documents with DMV and the buyer. A scrap-only route does not erase an undisclosed lien.
