Scrapping has a permanent consequence
DOR states that a vehicle scrapped, demolished or used for parts cannot be repaired or legally driven. Agree whether the transaction is for permanent dismantling rather than assuming every damaged car is already scrap.
The purchasing business has reporting duties
Salvage dealers, including secondary metals recyclers, parts dealers and scrap processors, report title cancellation and NMVTIS information through Auto Data Direct under DOR’s procedure.
An owner submission follows separate instructions
For an owner submission, send the original Georgia title in your name or properly assigned to you, plus a signed statement on letterhead giving the year, make, VIN and title number. If the plate was left on the car, follow DOR’s Georgia-plate submission instructions and include Form T-158. Follow DOR’s submission address and instructions; this route does not accept an out-of-state title.
Retain the handover record
Ask the purchasing business which documents it needs and keep a copy of the completed transaction. Cancel your registration using the applicable seller process as well.
