Check the actual title classification
Georgia DOR describes salvage vehicles to include certain seriously damaged vehicles, total-loss claims and vehicles carrying specified out-of-state damage brands. Do not describe a salvage title as a clear title simply because the engine still runs.
Do not drive on a salvage title
DOR states that salvage vehicles cannot legally operate on Georgia public roads. Arrange towing and tell the purchasing partner about the damage and current ownership document.
Confirm the insurance position
Establish whether the insurer is taking the vehicle or whether you are retaining it. If ownership is being transferred to the insurer, you cannot independently promise the same vehicle to another buyer.
Distinguish repair from permanent scrapping
A salvage vehicle and a vehicle whose title has been cancelled for dismantling follow different routes. Use the scrap-title guide if the vehicle is being permanently dismantled; use DOR’s rebuilt guidance if you are considering restoration instead.
