Start with the model year
DOR lists 1962 and older model vehicles among those not requiring a title. For model years 1963 through 1985, optional titling depends on the existing title and assignment history.
Check the chain of documents
The optional-title route can apply where the title is in your name or properly assigned through the recorded owner or a dealer. DOR identifies a restriction where registration has passed to someone other than the owner shown on the Georgia title.
Keep ownership evidence
Explain which title, registration and sale records you hold. An older vehicle still needs a lawful ownership transfer; a missing document is not the same as a title-optional vehicle.
Avoid a universal age shortcut
Do not apply a rolling 20-year or 25-year rule to Georgia titles. Ask the County Tag Office and purchasing partner which documents match this model year and record.
