Separate the offer and loan balance
Ask the lender for a current payoff and the process for releasing its interest. The vehicle offer does not automatically settle the loan. Agree the payoff arrangement before signing the transfer.
Electronic releases come from the lender
DOR directs owners to the lender for an electronically recorded release. The department does not perform that release on the lender’s behalf.
Check paper release documents
For a paper record, the lienholder completes the release section. If the title is unavailable, its guidance provides for a signed T-4 release; the County Tag Office can verify it.
Check both the title date and model year
DOR lists two release exceptions: a lien recorded at least 10 years from the title’s issue date on a vehicle at least 11 model years old, or at least four years on a vehicle at least 12 model years old. Mobile homes, cranes and vehicles over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight still require a release. Have the County Tag Office check the record against these conditions.
