Replace a missing Georgia vehicle title

Use the recorded owner and lien details to prepare the replacement application.

Apply through the county tag office

DOR’s replacement route requires a completed MV-1 application, the damaged title if applicable and the replacement fee. Check the county office’s current payment and identification instructions before visiting.

Explain any remaining lien

A paid loan can still be recorded on the title. The application may need the lender’s T-4 release; ask the county office about the record and applicable exceptions. Do not treat the age of the car as proof that every lien has disappeared.

A lost assignment needs the previous owner

If a title is lost before a new title has been issued, DOR directs the previous owner to obtain the replacement. Both parties then complete the assignment again.

Use a different route for an estate

A replacement cannot be issued in a deceased person’s name. Use the inheritance instructions to establish who can apply and transfer the vehicle.
