Update identification first
Georgia DOR directs owners to update their Georgia driver’s license or identification card through DDS before changing the title name at the County Tag Office.
Prepare the supporting documents
For an in-person change, bring the current Georgia title, valid Georgia identification and a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order supporting the change. Check the county’s arrangements before visiting.
Use the mail checklist if needed
The mail route also requires Form MV-1 and a copy of the Georgia identification. Follow the DOR instructions for a paid lien and include the required certified name-change document.
Explain any remaining mismatch
Tell the purchasing partner if the title still uses your previous name. A name change is different from selling another person’s vehicle; an estate or representative sale needs the appropriate ownership authority.
