Cancel registration first

Georgia DOR instructs owners to cancel registration before insurance coverage. This also applies when a vehicle is inoperable and taken out of service. Simply stopping insurance can leave an active registration without the required coverage.

Choose online or county service

Use DRIVES e-Services with the plate or VIN and your driver’s license number or Letter ID. The in-person route uses Form MV-18J at your County Tag Office.

Do not drive after cancellation

A cancelled registration does not permit road use. Arrange free towing for your vehicle purchase and tell the purchasing partner about the current registration status.

Save the confirmation

Keep the cancellation confirmation with your transfer and payment records. If you already have an insurance or suspension notice, contact the county office and insurer about the record rather than assuming a new enquiry corrects it.
