Checking a Florida car’s VIN and title record

Match the car to its paperwork before agreeing to a transfer. A record lookup and a physical VIN verification serve different purposes.

Compare the vehicle and ownership documents

Read the VIN from the vehicle and compare it with the title. If they differ, stop and ask the issuing office to resolve the discrepancy. Do not remove, replace or alter an identification plate.

Use the official vehicle information check

FLHSMV’s Vehicle Information Check accepts a title number or VIN. Open the official service directly and follow its verification instructions. A lookup is a useful starting point; it does not replace the documents needed to transfer ownership.

Determine whether physical verification is required

A transaction involving a first Florida title for a used vehicle can require physical VIN verification. This is different from an online record search. Ask the processing office whether your transaction requires it and who can complete it.

Plan for a car that cannot be driven

If verification is required, explain that the car does not run and ask about an appropriate authorized verifier. Do not arrange to drive an unsafe or unregistered vehicle simply to obtain a paperwork check.

Official sources and next steps.

Use the current instructions for your particular title and transaction. A tax collector or FLHSMV can confirm document requirements; an estate or ownership dispute may require legal advice.
