Correcting a Florida vehicle title before selling

Resolve an incorrect name, VIN or lien entry before completing the sale. A correction is different from replacing a lost title.

Identify the incorrect entry

Compare the title with your identification, vehicle identification number and lender records. Note exactly which entry is wrong and keep any documents that show the correct information. Do not erase, overwrite or use correction fluid on the title.

Ask for the appropriate correction process

FLHSMV procedure TL-04 covers changes and corrections to title and lien information. Explain whether the problem is a recording error or a change in circumstances. The supporting evidence and charges can differ; an agency error is not the same as a customer-requested change.

If the mistake is in the sale assignment

Tell the processing office which field was completed incorrectly, who entered it and whether the buyer has already signed. Ask which correction documents are required before either party signs another document. Retain the original paperwork.

Keep collection coordinated with the correction

Let the buyer know that a document needs attention. Confirm when the corrected record or accepted supporting documents will be available before scheduling the final transfer.

Official sources and next steps.

Use the current instructions for your particular title and transaction. A tax collector or FLHSMV can confirm document requirements; an estate or ownership dispute may require legal advice.
