Ask the lender for the next steps
Request a current payoff amount, its valid-through date, payment instructions and the process for releasing the lien. Ask whether the title is electronic or held on paper. Keep the lender’s written instructions with your sale records.
Distinguish a private sale from a dealer trade-in
Orange County’s official seller guidance notes that a vehicle with an existing lien can be traded to a dealership. Do not assume that this makes an unresolved lien transferable in every other transaction. Ask the lender and tax collector how your proposed sale can be completed.
Work out the amount remaining after payoff
Compare the offer with the lender’s actual payoff and any separately agreed costs. If the offer does not cover the payoff, ask the lender how the difference must be settled. A quoted vehicle price is not necessarily the amount you receive.
Document who pays whom
Before collection, establish the purchaser’s identity, who sends payment to the lender, how the release is evidenced and how any balance reaches you. Do not send banking credentials or identity-document images through the vehicle-notes field.
Official sources and next steps.
Use the current instructions for your particular title and transaction. A tax collector or FLHSMV can confirm document requirements; an estate or ownership dispute may require legal advice.
