Selling to an individual

For a private sale in which the Florida title remains electronic, buyer and seller attend the tax collector’s office or license plate agency and complete the reassignment there. Prepare identification, the VIN/title record, purchaser details, sale date, price and the applicable mileage disclosure. HSMV 82092 applies to its stated odometer-exempt electronic-title transactions; its instructions require HSMV 82994 when the vehicle is not exempt. Obtain the appropriate secure document through the office and sign the required seller and purchaser fields before processing.

Requesting a paper title

A paper title can be requested through the tax collector or the department’s online service, subject to applicable requirements and fees. Check lien status first. Do not schedule a handover around an assumed delivery date; confirm when the usable document or transfer appointment will be available.

A dealer transaction follows its own route

FLHSMV describes separate electronic-title reassignment procedures for Florida dealerships. Ask who the actual purchasing entity is and which documents it requires. An enquiry website, transporter and licensed purchasing dealer should not be treated as interchangeable roles.

Keep a transaction record

Record who is buying the car, how ownership will be reassigned, the agreed price and collection terms. Resolve any lender interest and follow the seller-notification rules for your type of transaction; private sales and licensed-dealer transactions have different requirements.
