Selling a Florida car with an electronic title

An electronic title is an ownership record, not a lost certificate. Decide how the transfer will be handled before arranging handover.

Selling to an individual

FLHSMV’s electronic-title procedure describes an in-person reassignment at a tax collector’s office or license plate agency when a vehicle is sold to an individual and the title will remain electronic. Buyer and seller complete the applicable secure reassignment and odometer information there. Ask the office what to bring and whether an appointment is needed.

Requesting a paper title

A paper title can be requested through the tax collector or the department’s online service, subject to applicable requirements and fees. Check lien status first. Do not schedule a handover around an assumed delivery date; confirm when the usable document or transfer appointment will be available.

A dealer transaction follows its own route

FLHSMV describes separate electronic-title reassignment procedures for Florida dealerships. Ask who the actual purchasing entity is and which documents it requires. An enquiry website, transporter and licensed purchasing dealer should not be treated as interchangeable roles.

Keep a transaction record

Record who is buying the car, how ownership will be reassigned, the agreed price and collection terms. Resolve any lender interest and follow the seller-notification rules for your type of transaction; private sales and licensed-dealer transactions have different requirements.

Official sources and next steps.

Use the current instructions for your particular title and transaction. A tax collector or FLHSMV can confirm document requirements; an estate or ownership dispute may require legal advice.
