Identify the issuing state
Read the title and check the names, lien information and any title brand. Tell the buyer that the vehicle is physically in Florida but carries another state’s title. Ask the issuing authority about a lost title or correction to its ownership record.
Do not apply Florida-title instructions blindly
The signing fields and replacement-title process may belong to the issuing state. If the transaction requires a Florida title application, Orange County publishes a separate out-of-state-title checklist. Ask the processing office which route applies to the buyer and vehicle.
Separate title transfer from permission to drive
Transport and registration are separate questions. Do not assume that an old plate or expired registration permits driving after the sale. Discuss collection or lawful transport and check the requirements with the relevant motor vehicle authority.
Ask for a transaction-specific cost breakdown
Title fees, tax treatment and registration needs depend on the transaction and buyer. Ask the processing office for the applicable charges rather than treating a vehicle offer as a tax calculation. Gift, donation, interstate and business transactions need their own answers.
Official sources and next steps.
Use the current instructions for your particular title and transaction. A tax collector or FLHSMV can confirm document requirements; an estate or ownership dispute may require legal advice.
