Compare the ownership document with the vehicle VIN and owner records. Note which entry is incorrect and retain the original document. Do not erase entries or use correction fluid while trying to fix the record.

Ask whether REG 101 applies

REG 101 records an error or erasure on a California or nonresident title and must be completed by the person who made that error. Identify the incorrect entry and retain the original document. This is not permission to alter a secure reassignment form or resolve every mileage discrepancy.

Check mileage separately

Use DMV’s separate odometer-error procedure for a wrong reading or mileage disclosure. Identify whether the error is on the title, an application or a secure reassignment document, and retain the original for the processing office. REG 262 cannot contain alterations or erasures. Follow the document-specific replacement or disclosure instructions rather than using REG 101 as a universal mileage correction.
