California odometer disclosures and signatures

Prepare the correct mileage disclosure for the vehicle and transfer.

Check model year before marking exempt

California DMV’s odometer bulletin applies the 20-model-year disclosure period to model year 2011 and newer vehicles. Do not assume a non-running car or a vehicle over ten years old is automatically exempt. Check the current requirement for the model year.

Use the correct transfer document

DMV describes different disclosure documents depending on the title being used. REG 262 may be needed for a transfer or reassignment. Obtain the accepted form through DMV or the processing party; do not substitute an informal mileage note for a required disclosure.

Complete the record accurately

Use the actual reading and applicable mileage status. If a reading is unavailable or an entry is wrong, ask how to complete or correct the document before signing. The owner and purchaser details must match the transaction.
