Texas vehicle sale: mileage and odometer disclosure

Check the model year

Federal rules retain the extended disclosure requirement for model year 2011 and newer vehicles for their first 20 years. A 2011 vehicle does not become exempt under this age rule until 2031. Model year 2010 and older vehicles are outside that extended requirement.

A broken display needs an accurate explanation

Do not guess a reading or certify it as actual mileage when you know it is incorrect. Federal guidance requires the seller to identify an incorrect reading on the title. Explain a broken display, replacement instrument cluster or discrepancy before completing the documents.

Match the statement to the vehicle

Have the VIN and current display reading available with your title. Check the required disclosure with the purchasing partner before signing. Calling a car junk or scrap does not by itself establish an odometer exemption.

Keep a readable copy

Photograph the displayed reading if it can be safely read, and keep the completed transaction paperwork. A service-history estimate can help explain condition, but it is not a substitute for the required disclosure.
