Is an abandoned car the same as my unwanted car?

DMV distinguishes abandoned and unclaimed vehicles. First establish who owns the vehicle, why it is on the property and whether an authority or storage operator is involved. A sale enquiry for your own vehicle cannot establish ownership of someone else’s car.

Can a property owner use a disposal form?

DMV describes a restricted MV-37 process for qualifying abandoned vehicles. It has separate conditions from the vehicle-owner MV-35 form. Read the current DMV instructions and confirm eligibility with the relevant authority and licensed recipient before signing anything; elapsed time alone is not authority to sell.

Who should I contact locally?

Use the city’s abandoned-vehicle or code-enforcement route for its jurisdiction. Provide the location, plate status and any existing case number. Keep notices and instructions. If it is your car and it has been impounded, establish release requirements before scheduling purchase collection.
