New York ownership papers for older cars

A New York car from model year 1972 or earlier uses a different ownership-document route.

Does every old car need a New York title?

New York does not issue title certificates for motor vehicles of model year 1972 or earlier. DMV identifies a New York transferable registration, together with a bill of sale, as the ownership-transfer route for these vehicles. The registration must be original or certified, not a photocopy.

How do I check the document?

Look for its transferable status, compare the recorded owner and VIN, and follow the assignment instructions. An expired registration and a non-transferable registration are not the same issue. Ask DMV which evidence is acceptable if the document is missing or the ownership chain is incomplete.

Is this the same as scrapping without a title?

A vehicle for which New York does not issue a title differs from a newer car with a lost title. Explain the model year and actual documents to the buyer so the correct transaction route is chosen.
