Florida license plates and insurance after selling

Plan the plate and insurance steps together. The car leaving your driveway does not finish every registration task.

Remove the plate at handover

Florida’s consumer seller guide instructs sellers to remove the license plate. Keep control of the plate and discuss whether you will transfer it to another eligible vehicle or surrender it. Do not leave it with the buyer simply because the vehicle is being transported.

Handle surrender before cancellation

FLHSMV’s plate-surrender procedure says an owner intending to cancel insurance on a vehicle with a valid plate and decal should first surrender them. Orange County also advises surrendering the plate before cancelling insurance to avoid suspension and reinstatement fees. Confirm your circumstances with the office and insurer before changing coverage.

If you plan to keep or transfer the plate

RS-43 allows an owner disposing of a vehicle to provide HSMV 82050 to a tax collector or license plate agency instead of surrendering the plate to prevent a financial-responsibility suspension. A driver-license-only office cannot process that form. Ask the tax collector how this applies when retaining a plate, and coordinate the registration record and insurance change before cancelling coverage.

Keep proof of the follow-up

Retain the plate-surrender receipt or transfer confirmation, sale-notice evidence and insurance-change confirmation. If the car was already towed with its plate attached, ask the towing operator about retrieving it before completing the remaining steps.

Official sources and next steps.

Use the current instructions for your particular title and transaction. A tax collector or FLHSMV can confirm document requirements; an estate or ownership dispute may require legal advice.
