Which BAR incentive could apply?
As checked September 26, 2026, BAR lists $1,350 with no income test and a failed Smog Check; $1,500 with qualifying income and a completed test within 180 days, pass or fail; and $2,000 with qualifying income and a failed test. The income ceiling is 225% of the federal poverty level. Smog-exempt vehicles have a separate test exception under the $1,500 option.
What other eligibility checks matter?
The options have ownership, registration-history, vehicle-equipment and participation limits. Review the full list for your option. The car must be drivable and pass the contracted dismantler’s inspection; the $1,500 option excludes battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
When should you deliver the car?
Apply first and wait for the eligibility letter. BAR will not reimburse retirement completed before approval. Bring the required title, identification and eligibility letter to the contracted dismantler before the letter expires.
How does a private sale compare?
Our partners accept vehicles in any physical condition and include free towing. The private offer depends on condition and weight, rather than the BAR incentive schedule. Compare the actual offer with the program route you qualify for before accepting either. Resolve ownership and any lender interest whichever route you choose.
