Which newer vehicles are exempt from a sale inspection?
For gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles, BAR lists four model years and newer as exempt for ownership changes. The eight-model-year exception applies to registration renewal. These newer-vehicle exceptions do not apply to diesel vehicles.
Which vehicle categories are exempt?
BAR lists gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles from 1975 or earlier; diesel vehicles from 1997 or earlier or above 14,000 pounds GVWR; electric vehicles; and motorcycles as exempt. Check the actual fuel type and model year.
What does the seller provide?
For a private sale requiring inspection, give the buyer the inspection report showing a pass within 90 days. Immediate-family transfers have a separate exemption; a relative buying a car from another seller does not create that exemption.
What if the vehicle cannot pass?
Describe the failed test and condition before accepting an offer. Confirm the actual sale or dismantling route with DMV and the receiving business. A description such as junk car does not itself establish an exemption.
