Report the transfer within five calendar days.
California DMV instructs sellers to submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, also called an NRL or REG 138, within five calendar days of the sale or transfer. Plan this step as part of the handover rather than leaving it to the buyer.
Read California DMV’s NRL instructions and use the official online NRL service.
Have the transaction details at hand.
The official REG 138 form asks for information about the seller, buyer, vehicle and transaction. Obtain the buyer’s correct details when agreeing to the sale, so you can complete your notification accurately.
Use the official REG 138 form to check the current fields. Keep a copy or confirmation for your records.

Check which transfer process fits your car.
A private sale, a vehicle acquired by a dealer, and a vehicle going for dismantling may involve different paperwork. Describe missing documents, a lien or any salvage status before arranging collection. Ask the buyer how the transaction will be documented and check the relevant DMV instructions.
Start with California DMV’s vehicle-title guidance. Don’t assume that the same checklist covers every type of sale.
Keep the selling decision separate from the paperwork.
Before accepting an offer, review the amount, collection terms and inspection process. If the car cannot be driven, explain whether it rolls and steers and where it is parked. See non-running vehicle preparation for those details.
